<p>A fine pair of Victorian oils on board by acclaimed marine artist William Thornley c.1880. Born William Anslow Thornley (1858-1898), this highly regarded artist painted mostly coastal marine scenes showing the mood of the weather and seas in superb detail. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1859 and at the British Institute from 1861 until its closure in 1867, and continued to exhibit at the R.A until 1898. The matching pair painted on oak boards are typical of the artists style larger sailing ships in the background and smaller boats with sailor aboard in the foreground set against a calm sea with a storm brewing in the sky. Both paintings in superb condition and signed by the artist bottom left, sat in quality timber gilt frames. Each measures including the frames 14" wide x 16.5" high. Stock number BA106.</p>
